Please enter a number, e.g. 1,250.00
Defaults are the German rates of 19% and 7% as of early 2026, please check. A calculator, not tax advice.

How it works
- 01Choose whether you have the net amount or the gross amount.
- 02Type the amount with a decimal point: 1,250.00. Pasting “12.50 €” from the clipboard works too.
- 03Choose the rate: 19%, 7% or one of your own. Net, tax and gross appear at once.
Calculating VAT: the formulas. Net to gross: net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Gross to net: gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The tax is the difference between the two. Amounts are rounded half up to whole cents.
Example 1: net to gross. €1,250.00 net at 19%: the tax is 1,250.00 × 0.19 = €237.50, the gross amount is €1,487.50.
Example 2: taking VAT out. €50.00 gross at 19%: 50.00 ÷ 1.19 = €42.02 net, the tax is €7.98. A common mistake is to simply subtract 19% of the gross amount. That gives €40.50 and leads you to the wrong amount, because the 19% are calculated on the net amount.
Example 3: reduced rate. €10.70 gross at 7%: 10.70 ÷ 1.07 = €10.00 net, the tax is €0.70.
In Germany, VAT is called Mehrwertsteuer in everyday language and Umsatzsteuer (USt) in the law. The standard rate in Germany is 19%, the reduced rate of 7% applies to many foods and books, for example (as of early 2026, please check). For other countries or older invoices, enter the rate yourself. Which rate applies to your goods is set by the law or your tax advisor, not by this calculator.
