Calculator with steps

Type the whole calculation, brackets and percent included. Every finished calculation stays on the tape as a line: to check, copy and keep calculating.

Result–

Memory: empty

Keyboard: Enter calculates, Esc clears the calculation. The tape stays as it is.

Paper tape

empty

No calculation yet. Type one and press “=” or Enter, then it shows up here.

Round the display to

“all” shows up to 12 decimal places. If you see ≈ instead of =, the display is rounded. The calculator keeps working with the exact value.

The tape lives only in this tabNothing is saved. If you close the tab or reload the page, the tape, the memory and the last result are gone. Copy what you want to keep or save it as a file.

Goes well with: Percentage calculator · Rule of three · VAT · Split the bill (German)

Everything is calculated on your device only. No calculation leaves the browser.

How it works
  1. 01Type the whole calculation with the keys or your keyboard: 200 + 19% or (12.50 + 7.90) × 3. While you type, the line below the field shows how the calculator reads it.
  2. 02“=” or Enter calculates. The calculation moves to the tape and the field is free for the next one.
  3. 03Tap a line to insert its result into the new calculation. “Steps” opens the intermediate steps, the cross deletes the line.

Order of operations: multiplication and division before addition and subtraction, brackets first, otherwise left to right. The square binds more tightly than the sign: −5² is −25, (−5)² is 25. That is why the x² key adds the brackets itself when a number with a sign comes before it. The square root applies to the number or bracket directly after it.

Percent as in everyday life: 200 + 19% gives 238 and 200 − 10% gives 180: the percent refers to everything on its left. With times and divided by, 19% is simply 0.19. “50% of 80” gives 40. If you really mean 200 + 0.19, write 200 + (19%).

Numbers: decimals with a point. You may type thousands separators (1,250.50). A single comma that cannot be a thousands separator counts as a decimal comma: 1,5 is 1.5, but 1,250 is 1250. The line below the field shows what was understood.

Precision: the calculator works with fractions instead of the computer’s floating point numbers. So 0.1 + 0.2 is exactly 0.3 and 1 ÷ 3 × 3 is exactly 1. It shows at most 12 decimal places. A ≈ means the display is rounded. Square roots that do not come out even are calculated to 120 decimal places, so the digits shown are still right when you multiply such a root by a very large number. It rejects numbers with more than 100 digits before the decimal point, and a calculation may be 500 characters long.

Keep calculating: if you type an operator right after a result, the calculator puts “Ans” in front, the last result at full precision. A tapped line and MR, on the other hand, insert the number with at most 12 decimal places. If there is already a number at the cursor, it is replaced, not extended.

Memory: M+ adds the value of the calculation in the field to the memory, M− subtracts it. If the field is empty, the last result is used. MR inserts the memory into the calculation, MC clears it.

Tape: it holds 500 lines. The total adds up the exact results, not the rounded display. If it has more than 100 digits before the decimal point, a note appears instead of the number. Copied text and the files use the rounding you chose. The text file also contains the steps. The CSV file separates columns with commas and writes the results with a decimal point and without thousands separators, so a spreadsheet reads them as numbers. After “Save”, your browser puts the file in your downloads folder or asks you where to put it.

Keyboard: digits, point, + − * / and brackets, % for percent, ^2 for the square, “sqrt” for the square root, “of” and “Ans” as words. Enter or = calculates, Esc clears the calculation, Backspace the last character. If you moved to a calculator key with the Tab key, Enter presses that key, so use = to calculate. On this page the / key is the division sign and does not open the search. You can still reach the search with Ctrl+K. On a phone the on-screen keyboard stays closed, the keys are there for that.

Limits: this is a calculator for everyday use. It cannot do trigonometric functions, logarithms, powers other than the square, or calculations with units.
