Fraction practice

Practice sheets for grades 5 and 6 with random exercises: simplify, build up, compare, add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. A new sheet every time, with a solution sheet, as a PDF. The PDF is in German, for German schools.

Applies to Germany. Deadlines, tax rates, public holidays and requirements on this page follow German law. Austria, Switzerland and other countries have different rules.

Simplify each fraction as far as possible: 12/18 = 2/3.

Numbers as in grade

Grade 5 has smaller denominators and easier numbers, grade 6 larger ones. Which kind of exercise belongs to which grade is set by your federal state.

Leave empty for the suggestion.

4 to 30. With more than 22 exercises the sheet takes a second page.

1 to 5, each one rolled anew.

When printing, choose “Actual size” or “100%”, not “Fit to page”.

Goes well with: math sheets for primary school · times tables and number sheets · percentage calculator

Nothing leaves this device. Exercises and PDF are made here in your browser.

How it works
  1. 01Choose the kind of exercise and the grade. The preview shows the first sheet at once, and the solutions with one click on “Solutions”.
  2. 02Set the number of exercises and of sheets. If you do not like a sheet, “Roll again”.
  3. 03Download the PDF and print it at “Actual size”.

Nine kinds of exercise. Simplify and build up, compare with <, > or =, add and subtract with same and with different denominators, multiply and divide, mixed numbers and improper fractions, fractions and decimals. All results are simplified the way the solution sheet shows them; improper fractions stay as they are.

Random without repeats. No exercise appears twice on a sheet. All exercises can be solved: in subtraction the result is greater than 0, in multiplication and division the result is never a whole number, and when comparing, “equal” also occurs. The randomness cannot be repeated, a sheet can only be kept as a PDF.

Limits. A4 portrait only, black on white, the solutions in red. There are no word problems and no number lines. This is no curriculum: you decide which exercises suit your grade. The heading is set in Helvetica; characters this font does not know appear as question marks and the page tells you.

Nothing is saved. The page remembers neither settings nor sheets.
