Times tables with Emil

Emil the elephant thinks things through and practices the small times tables with you. Pick your tables, solve problems on screen and get a hint when you are stuck. There is also a worksheet with solutions and number sheets to print: hundred chart, number line and fraction strips.

For parents and teachersMade for grades 2 to 4. It practices the small times tables with factors 1 to 10, multiplying and dividing. There is no timer, no points and no leaderboard, and nothing is remembered: When you close the page, everything is gone.
Tables

Tap the tables you want to practice. One table on its own works too.

Type

Multiplying works in both directions (7 · 3 and 3 · 7). Dividing is by the table number: 21 : 7.

Problems per round
Problem 1 of 10

The Enter key checks your answer, and after a correct answer Enter moves on. After the first mistake Emil gives a hint, after the second he tells you the answer, and the problem comes back once at the end of the round.

Goes with: Math worksheets · Math and coloring · Counting with Hilde · Number house with Hilde (German) · Learning pass and certificate (German) · Math with money (German)

Nothing leaves this device. Problems, feedback and PDF are made here in your browser, and nothing is saved, not even a result.

How it works
  1. 01Tap the tables and choose the type.
  2. 02Practice: type the answer and press Check. Right: next one. Wrong: Emil gives a hint.
  3. 03Worksheet: choose the number of problems and the print size, download the PDF and print it at actual size.
  4. 04Number sheets: choose a sheet, look at the preview, download the PDF. The solution is on the page after it.

The problems. Multiplication problems come in both directions (7 · 3 and 3 · 7), division problems divide by the chosen table (21 : 7). In one round every problem appears once, as long as there are enough different ones. If the selection has fewer problems than the round is long (the 1 times table alone, multiplying only, has 19), some come back, but never twice in a row.

The hints. Emil works from the core problems: times 1, times 2, times 5 and times 10. For 7 · 8, for example: first 7 · 10 = 70, then take away 7 · 2 = 14. When dividing, he asks for the inverse problem and says whether the answer is bigger or smaller than 5. That way a child learns a way to work it out, not just the answer.

At the end of the round you see how many problems were right the first time, and which ones can be practiced again. This list disappears with the next round.

The worksheet comes from the same building block as the Math worksheets: random problems for the chosen tables, with no repeats on a sheet, and a solution page behind it.

Number sheets. The hundred chart shows the numbers 1 to 100 in ten rows, and a thicker line divides it after every fifth row and column. With gaps, 10 to 40 numbers are missing, and the solution shows them with a gray background. On the number line every line has 11 marks in the chosen step, 5 to 7 numbers are missing, and at least four are shown so that the step can be seen. On the fraction strips the strip is divided into equal parts, and the solution colors the first parts. The wall is a fixed sheet to cut out and compare. The same no. and the same settings give the same sheet.

Limits. Only the small times tables up to 10 · 10, no word problems. Which tables are taught in which grade is up to your school. The tool is not a test and says nothing about a child's level.
