Counting with Hilde

Hilde the hen likes to count her eggs. On screen you count along with her or put eggs in the basket. There are also sheets to print: match amounts, trace numbers and color eggs, up to 10 or up to 20.

For parents and preschool teachersMade for preschool, from about age 4. In the ten frame the eggs lie in rows of five, so a child sees 5 and 10 at a glance. Scattered eggs are harder. There are no points, no timer and no leaderboard, and nothing is remembered.

Game
Problem 1 of 10

How many eggs are in Hilde's basket?

In “Fill basket” Hilde shows a number, and you put that many eggs in the basket. With the keyboard: Tab moves to the buttons, Enter presses. With a screen reader, “Read eggs one by one” reads out every egg once, so a child can count along.

Goes with: Counting amounts and writing numbers (German) · Number house with Hilde (German) · Times tables with Emil · Hundred chart, number line and fraction strips · Math and coloring

Nothing leaves this device. The game and the PDF are made here in your browser, and nothing is saved, not even a score.

How it works
  1. 01Choose how far to count and how the eggs lie.
  2. 02Play: ten problems per round. In “How many?” the child taps the right number, in “Fill basket” it puts that many eggs in the basket.
  3. 03Print: choose a sheet, look at the preview, download the PDF and print it at actual size.

How many? Hilde shows eggs, and below them are three numbers to choose from: the right one and two neighbors. If the answer is wrong, the problem stays until the child finds the right one. Up to 10, every number appears exactly once in a round, up to 20 there are ten different ones.

Fill basket. Hilde shows a number. With plus the child puts an egg in the basket, with minus it takes one away, and Done checks. At most 10 or 20 eggs fit in. The eggs always lie in the ten frame, so they do not jump around when you add one.

The sheets. Match has six boxes up to 10 and five up to 20, every number only once. Color has seven numbers, up to 20 with two ten frames in each row. The solution colors the eggs gray or draws the lines. The no. is printed small at the bottom of the sheet. With several sheets it counts on, so not every child gets the same numbers.

Limits. A4 portrait only. The digits are a simple print style made of lines and circles. The shape can differ from the one your preschool or school teaches. The tool does not replace support and says nothing about whether a child counts at the right level for their age.
