Math and coloring

Every box holds a problem, and the result tells the color. Whoever calculates and colors correctly sees a picture in the end. For grades 1 to 4, with built-in or self-painted pictures and a solution sheet, as a PDF.

1 · Math

Preset

Grade 1: plus and minus up to 10 or 20, large boxes. Grade 2: plus and minus up to 100 with the 2s, 5s and 10s tables. Grade 3: all tables, times and divided by. Grade 4: mixed up to 1000. After that you can change everything.

Type of math

Mental math with plus and minus, as on the math worksheets.

Number range up to

Never a 0 in the problem, never a result below 1. At least one number is greater than 10.

Plus or minus
Crossing the ten

With crossing: calculated digit by digit, a ten is filled up (27 + 5) or has to be broken open (32 − 5). Without: every digit works on its own.

Automatic: as many result numbers (1 to 4) as it takes for every color to have at least 4 different problems, more for large areas.

2 · Picture

Built-in pictures

3 · Sheets

Leave empty for the suggestion: Math picture: plus and minus up to 20

1 to 30. Every sheet has its own No. and different result numbers and problems, so nobody copies from the neighbor.

1 to 999999. The same No. and the same settings give the same sheet. More sheets get the following numbers.

Solutions

After each: every sheet is followed by its solution. If you print on both sides, the solution ends up on the back; then “At the end” is better.

When printing, choose “Actual size” or “100%”, not “Fit to page”, otherwise the boxes get smaller than stated.

Saves settings, No. and your self-painted picture as a JSON file on your device. If there is a name in the heading, it is in the file too.

Only problems, without a picture: Math worksheets · On screen: Times tables with Emil (German) · Also for coloring: Mandalas · All kids tools

Nothing leaves this device. Picture, problems and PDF are made here in your browser, nothing is saved.

How it works
  1. 01Choose a preset for the grade or set type of math and number range yourself.
  2. 02Choose a built-in picture or paint your own. The preview shows the first sheet right away and next to it how it looks when finished.
  3. 03Set the number of sheets, download the PDF and print at “Actual size”.

What it is. A math picture: Every box of a small pixel picture holds a problem. At the bottom of the sheet it says which result has which color, for example “12 and 18: red”, with an empty box to color in beforehand. The white boxes have problems too (“stays white”), so the picture cannot be recognized before calculating. If you miscalculate, you see it in the picture: If the picture is right, the math is right. For pure worksheets without a picture there are the Math worksheets.

The problems follow the same rules as on the math worksheets: never a 0, never a result below 1, and a number of the problem or the result is above the next smaller number range (so for up to 100, above 20). Up to 1000 the second number is round (7, 40 or 300). Every color gets its own result numbers, and no number belongs to two colors. Results with many different problems are preferred. In the boxes of one color the problems change in turn, and two boxes next to each other never carry the same problem as long as there are enough different ones. With “Both” and “Mixed”, every color gets all the operators its results allow: The operator does not give away the color.

To be honest: Small number ranges have few problems. Plus up to 10 has only 45 different ones, plus and minus up to 10 together 90. On a picture with more than 100 boxes they therefore repeat; the preview says how many different ones are on the sheet. If the result numbers are not enough for all colors (with plus and minus up to 10 there are only the results 1 to 10), every color gets fewer, and the preview says so.

The colors are common pencil colors: red, orange, yellow, green, light green, blue, light blue, purple, pink, brown, gray and black. If one is missing in the pencil case, the child takes another and writes it into the box of the color list. Printing is black on white. The colored extra is only meant for color printers.

The solution shows the same grid with the result and the first letter of the color in every box. If two colors have the same first letter (yellow, green, gray), there are two letters, such as Ge and Gn; the color list of the solution names them.

Size on the sheet. The boxes are at least 9 mm, with “Large boxes” at least 12 mm, and the type is never smaller than 7 pt. How big a box has to be depends on the longest problem: “1000 − 900” needs more room than “7 + 3”. The tool takes A4 portrait or landscape, depending on where the picture gets larger. If a picture is too large for a setting, the selection does not show it and says how many are missing. A picture of your own that does not fit is reported, with the largest size that still works. It is never reduced below the minimum size.

Paint your own. 6 to 20 boxes wide and 6 to 26 high, up to 6 colors and “stays white”. A picture of only one color without white boxes does not make a sheet, because then every box would be the same. The built-in pictures are designed here in the code, from boxes, without templates from the web.

The No. The same No. and the same settings give the same sheet with the same problems. This applies to this version of the tool, also for a saved file: If the tool changes later, the same No. and the same file can give different problems. If you want to keep a sheet for good, keep the PDF.

Nothing is saved. The page remembers neither settings nor your picture. The file from “Save to a file” contains the settings, the No. and your painted picture, no problems; they are made again when loading. If you just painted a picture and have not saved it yet, it stays in the editor when loading; the picture from the file only comes with “Use the picture from the file”. Before you leave the page with a self-painted picture, the browser asks.
