Flashcards to fold

Elli the magpie loves to collect and sort: Make cards with a question on the front and the answer on the back, for vocabulary, times tables or capitals. You print them on one side and fold them, or you print front and back on both sides.

The list below is replaced. You can change it any way you like afterwards.

Which tables

Tables 1 to 10. When you insert them, each table is multiplied by 1 to 10.

Front and back are on one line, separated by a semicolon. Up to 60 characters per side, at most 200 cards.

When printing, choose “Actual size” or “100%”, not “Fit to page”. Otherwise the cards get smaller, and when printing on both sides, front and back no longer line up.

How it works
  1. 01Insert a list or write your own: one card per line, front and back separated by a semicolon.
  2. 02Choose whether the cards are folded or printed on both sides, and the size.
  3. 03Download the PDF, print, cut out, done.

Folded. Front and back are next to each other on a strip, the back has a light gray background. You print only one side of the sheet, cut out the strip, fold it at the dashed line and glue the two halves together. Nothing has to line up exactly, this is the easiest way. With a glue stick on the inside the card gets sturdy; otherwise thin paper shows through.

Both sides. One sheet has the fronts, the next sheet has the backs. The backs are mirrored in the PDF: The card at the top left has its back at the top right. That is right when you print on both sides and flip the sheet on the long edge; most printers call this “Flip on long edge” or “Long-edge binding”. If you flip on the short edge, the backs are upside down and in the wrong place. Do a test print with one sheet first and hold it up to the light. Printers often shift the back by 1 to 2 mm; that is why the cards have some room inside. Without a duplex printer, you first print the odd pages, put the stack back in and then print the even pages. The test print shows which way the paper has to go in. Each sheet says in small print at the top left whether it is the front or the back.

The lists to insert. The times tables go from 1 to 10, without the reversed problems if you like. The capitals cover 39 countries in Europe and the 16 German states; names such as Chisinau or Reykjavik are written without special characters, and some state names are written without umlauts. Check the list before printing, also because names and borders can change; for school and tests, what your notebook or your book says is what counts. The vocabulary list is just a sample with 20 simple English and Spanish words; you write your own words in yourself.

Size. Small: 45 × 30 mm per side (folded, a card of 45 × 30 mm), Medium: 60 × 40 mm, Large: 90 × 60 mm. The text is set as large as it fits on the side, long words get smaller or wrap. Crop marks along the edge show every cutting line.

Limits. At most 200 cards, A4 portrait only. The font is Helvetica: Accents such as é or ñ work, emoji and many special characters do not; the page tells you beforehand. If a text does not fit on the side even in the smallest font, the page tells you and cuts it off.
