If too much background is left, move the slider to the right. If it eats into the subject, move it to the left.
The opacity fades out over this number of pixels, so the edge does not look jagged. The number applies to the saved image. For large photos it is therefore bigger than the slider step.
Off: only what is connected to the image edge is removed. On: also areas in the middle of the subject that have the same color. This can tear holes into the subject.
Transparent is saved as PNG, a color as JPG. JPG does not support transparency.
The checkerboard pattern shows what is transparent. The calculation runs on a smaller copy, the saved image has the size of your original.

How it works
- 01Choose an image or drag it into the box.
- 02Move the tolerance until the background is gone and the subject is still there. The preview updates right away, “Before” shows the original.
- 03Keep it transparent or choose a color and save. Your original stays unchanged.
What happens: A fill runs into the image from all four edges. Whatever is similar enough to the edge color and connected to the edge is removed. After that, the edge fades out softly over a few pixels, and tiny leftovers are removed. No model, no cloud, no detection of people or objects: the tool only sees colors.
Several colors at the edge: If there is a second color at the edge next to the main color, it only counts as background if it behaves like background, that is, it touches at least two sides of the image or fills one side from corner to corner, like a floor or a table edge. A patch of color that only touches part of one side stays: you see that in the preview right away and can adjust it with the tolerance. The other way around would be worse: a subject that touches the edge would otherwise be deleted without notice.
Images that are already transparent: Pixels that are already transparent in the image stay transparent. Their color does not count as an edge color, so you can drag a finished cutout PNG in here again without dark areas of the subject disappearing.
Works well: product photos on white cardboard, scans, logos and screenshots, pictures in front of a plain wall or a cloth.
Works poorly: a colorful or busy background, a subject in the color of the background, fine hair, fur, glass and strong blur. A thin fringe of the old background color can remain at the edge. A subject that touches the image edge over a wide stretch is also tricky, for example a portrait cut off at the bottom or a product standing across the whole bottom edge: its color then cannot be told apart from a floor and can disappear with it. In that case, crop it first. If it does not work at all, this usually helps: take the photo again in front of a plain light wall or a white sheet of paper, or use a program with AI and accept that the image gets uploaded for it.
Large images: The mask is calculated at most at 1.6 megapixels and stretched back to full size when saving. This keeps even a 12 megapixel photo smooth. The soft edge is enlarged along with it, so the slider shows the width that ends up in the saved image. Above 16 megapixels, the result is reduced because browsers fail above that: a 48 megapixel photo with 8064 × 6048 pixels becomes 4618 × 3464. The exact size appears below the preview as soon as your image is loaded.
Passport photos: Since May 2025, German authorities only accept digital photos for the ID card (Personalausweis) and passport that are taken at the office or by a registered photo service. An image you edited yourself does not count there. Elsewhere, too, a replaced background can be rejected. If in doubt, ask first.
