Markdown preview
Write a README, notes or a description in Markdown, see right away how it looks, and take clean HTML with you.
The preview follows as you type. You can also drag an .md file here. Up to 300,000 characters.
Copy HTML gives only the content, to paste into a page. The HTML file is a finished page with styling. Copy text gives the readable text without markup characters.
More for text: Format JSON · CSV to Markdown table · Compare two versions · Lorem Ipsum (placeholder text)
Your text stays on this device. Nothing is saved or sent, and the preview does not load images from the web.
How it works
- 01Write or paste Markdown, open an .md file or use the example. The preview shows right away how it looks. On a phone, you switch between Write and Preview at the top.
- 02Under “Take it with you” you copy the HTML to paste into a page, save a finished HTML file or copy the text without markup.
- 03The counters show the words (without Markdown characters), the characters (everything in the field) and the reading time at 200 words per minute, at least one minute.
This is what the tool knows: headings (# to ######, also with === or --- underneath), paragraphs, hard line breaks (two spaces or a \ at the end of the line), *italic*, **bold**, ~~strikethrough~~, `code`, code blocks with ``` or ~~~ (the language hint is kept as a class, nothing is colored), lists (nested, numbered, with tasks like - [ ]), quotes with >, horizontal rules, links, images, GitHub-style tables with alignment and the backslash \ before a character so that it stays text.
This is what it cannot do: no HTML in the text (what stands in angle brackets appears as text, including <br> and comments), no footnotes, no definition lists, no reference links like [text][id], no conversion of notations like and no formulas. It follows CommonMark and the GitHub extensions (tables, task lists, strikethrough). In edge cases, another program may display something differently.
Links and images: Only addresses with http:, https:, mailto: and tel: are allowed. Everything else, including references like #section or file.md, stays text, with the address after it in parentheses. In the preview, links open in a new tab. This page does not load images from the web, because it never fetches anything from outside: In the preview, the alt text appears instead, and in the HTML you take with you, the image is there with its address. Images directly in the text (data:) are shown by the preview as png, jpeg, gif or webp. Images with a path like image.png are not shown, only the alt text remains.
Tables: The first row is the header row, below it comes the separator row with --- and, if you like, : for alignment. You write a vertical bar in the text as \|, and a row without a vertical bar ends the table. Up to 100 columns and 50,000 cells are possible. Two spaces are enough for a sublist, and a bigger jump when indenting is also read as a sublist. Quotes and lists can be nested up to ten levels.
The HTML file is self-contained: with styling, without script, and it follows the light or dark setting of your system. Copy text gives headings, lists and tables as plain text, with a tab between the columns, so that it fits into a spreadsheet.
