Feelings cards and mood check

Meant for preschool, grades 1/2, grades 3/4 and grades 5/6. “Preschool” here means children of about 3 to 6 years.

Faces to cut out, a feelings thermometer, the daily mood as a weekly sheet, cards for morning circle and a sheet for matching face and word. For talking with children, for educators, parents and teachers.

Cards for talking, not a testThese are cards and sheets for talking. They are not a test and not a diagnosis, and they do not replace counseling. If you are worried about a child, talk to the pediatrician's office or a counseling service.

1 · Level and feelings

Which feelings

The level is a suggestion, not a rule and not a statement about the curriculum. Curricula differ from state to state, and I have not checked what is taught in which grade.

2 · What to print

Faces to cut out: the face large, the word below it. With cut marks, 10 mm margin.

Cards per A4 page

Back side

Guide lines

Marks: short lines outside the cards, for a paper cutter and ruler. Frame: a thin line around every card, good for scissors.

Settings as a file

Your browser remembers nothing. Save level, selection, settings and the No. as a file and load it again later. Names are only in it if you entered them, and then in plain text. The file is only made on your device.

Preview

When printing, choose “Actual size” or “100%”, not “Fit to page”. Otherwise cut marks, card size and scale no longer match.

A child's feelings are sensitive dataThe tool saves nothing, and the filled-in sheet stays with you. Keep it the way you keep other documents about a child, and only pass it on if the parents agree. Whether a face fits a child is up to the child, not the sheet.

Nothing leaves this device. Cards, sheets and PDF are made here in your browser, and nothing is saved. Children's names only exist if you enter them yourself.

How it works
  1. 01Choose a level and tick the feelings you need (at least 2).
  2. 02Choose a tab: Cards, Thermometer, Daily mood, Morning circle or Match. The preview shows the pages right away.
  3. 03Download the PDF and print it at “Actual size”.

The faces. They are simple drawings made of a circle, arcs and lines, built in the code. They have no hair, no ears and no gender. One child can read a simple face differently than another, and not every face is clear for every child. That is why the word is always there on cards, board, thermometer and weekly sheet. The only exception is the “Match faces” sheet, where face and word are deliberately apart.

Levels. Preschool shows the first 6 feelings (happy, sad, angry, scared, surprised, tired), grades 1/2 add calm and proud (8), grades 3/4 add excited and disappointed (10), grades 5/6 all 12 and “own face”, an empty circle to draw yourself. In the weekly sheet 4 (preschool), 5 (grades 1/2) or 6 faces appear per field, namely the first ones of your selection. The question “What was special today?” exists from grades 1/2. These are suggestions.

Cards. 6, 8 or 12 cards per A4 page, with cut marks in the margin. The back has a frame and an empty field with the prompt “When do you feel like this? Draw or tell.” (in preschool only “Draw or tell.”). Print double-sided and turn the sheet on the long edge: The backs are arranged mirrored and then lie behind their front. If your printer cannot do that, print the fronts, put the sheet back in and print the backs, or choose “To fold”: The back then sits below the front, above a fold line, and after folding the card is only half as tall as the field. Up to 6 sets, that is identical cards for groups.

Thermometer. One page for one feeling, the scale is 200 mm tall and has 3, 5 or 10 steps, numbered from bottom to top. The child colors in boxes and draws an arrow at the line on the left. Face and scale are simple shapes, not a picture from a collection.

Morning circle. The board has 6 fields. The name tags are for 1 to 40 names, up to 40 characters each, one line per name. The type is the same size for all as long as that gives at least 12 point; otherwise every tag gets the size its name needs, and long names with spaces run onto two lines. Empty lines are skipped. Letters like ł become the nearest base letter, and emojis and other scripts are missing in print. The page shows both beforehand. More than 40 names or a name with more than 40 characters are reported at the field, and nothing is cut silently.

Match. On the left are 4 to 8 faces, on the right the words in a different order, with dots to connect. Every sheet has a No. from 1 to 999999, in small print in the footer; the same No. and the same settings give exactly the same sheet, and further sheets get the following numbers. Faces that are easy to confuse never appear together on one sheet: calm with happy, bored or embarrassed, bored with tired, angry or disappointed, sad with disappointed, scared with surprised. This is caution based on looking and on a point comparison of the drawings, not proof that every other pair is safely told apart by every child. If you choose so few feelings that this is not possible, the page says so at the field. The solution page shows the match with lines.

Font. Text is set in Helvetica. For names, what it says under “Morning circle” applies: Umlauts, ß and é work, other characters are reported by the page beforehand.

Limits. At most 60 pages per PDF, 1 to 30 copies, 1 to 6 sets, 1 to 30 sheets. A4 only. Colors (if you turn them on) depend on the printer. The tool measures nothing and rates nothing: It draws what you set.
