How it works
- 01Choose the type at the top: EAN for retail goods, Code 128 for your own numbers, Code 39 for old scanners.
- 02Type the number or text. The code appears as you type; for EAN the check digit is added automatically.
- 03PNG for screens and Word, SVG for printing. Test once with your scanner before the first batch.
Quiet zone. To the left and right of the code there is an empty area (for EAN-13, eleven modules on the left and seven on the right). Without it the scanner cannot find the start. It is already included in the image. Do not cut it off and do not place anything in it.
Size. The narrowest bar is called a module. When printed, it should be about 0.33 mm wide for EAN; printed smaller, the code becomes unreliable. The PNG has exactly as many pixels as you set here, and every bar sits on whole pixels so nothing blurs. The SVG can be scaled to any size without loss. For print shops it is the better choice.
Check digit. For EAN the last digit is a checksum: the digits are weighted alternately with 1 and 3, and the sum is topped up to the next multiple of 10. If you type it in yourself and it does not match, the tool tells you and offers the correct one. Code 39 can have a similar check character but usually does not need it; Code 128 always has one, invisible in the code.
What this tool cannot do. It creates codes, it does not read them. It cannot scan codes or read them from a photo. Also not included: GS1-128 with application identifiers (FNC1), UPC-E, ITF-14, Code 93, DataMatrix and PDF417. You can create a UPC-A from the USA as an EAN-13 by putting a 0 in front. The bars are then correct, but the digits are arranged the EAN way. The human-readable text uses a font from your device, not the standardized OCR-B.
