Ruled paper and exercise books

Exercise book pages for grades 1 to 4 to print: ruling 1 to 4 for writing, squares of 10, 7 or 5 mm for math. Optionally with a correction margin, a header line and page numbers. As a PDF on A4 or A5.

Only lines and squares, no handwritingThe sheets contain no school handwriting and no text to trace. For tracing letters, words and numbers, see the writing practice sheets (German). Which ruling is used in which grade differs from school to school: Grade 1 often starts with ruling 1, and the lines get narrower over the years. If in doubt, ask the teacher.

Writing book with four lines 5 mm apart, often used in grade 1.

Writing books: the line spacing follows DIN 16552 and was looked up. The gap between two lines of writing and the split of the bands in rulings 3 and 4 are estimated. Hold your book next to the print and compare. Squares are math books and are named only by their side length here.

Correction margin

A 20 mm strip with a vertical line, for remarks by the teacher. The lines and squares start after it.

Orientation
mm

Most printers cannot print to the edge of the sheet. From about 6 mm it is safe.

When printing, choose “Actual size” or “100%”, not “Fit to page”, or the spacing will be off.

Nothing leaves this device. The PDF is created here in your browser.

How it works
  1. 01Choose the book type and, if you like, switch on a correction margin, a header line and a tinted middle band. The preview shows the first page right away.
  2. 02Set the sheet, margin, color and line weight. For children, mid gray with medium weight is a good start. The baseline is always bolder.
  3. 03Download the PDF and print it at “Actual size”. Print one page as a test first and hold it next to your book.

How it is calculated. Everything runs in millimeters and is converted to PDF points at 72 ⁄ 25.4 points per millimeter. First the usable height and width are worked out (sheet minus margin, header line and correction margin), then the number of lines or squares follows from that. Only what fits completely is drawn: A line or a square is never cut off. The rest stays empty at the bottom, and for squares on the left and right too, split evenly.

The rulings. Ruling 1: four lines 5 mm apart. Ruling 2: four lines 4 mm apart. Ruling 3: two lines (middle line and baseline) 3.5 mm apart. Ruling 4: one line (baseline) about every 10 mm. The sizes follow the German standard DIN 16552 (2005 edition). Not looked up and therefore estimated are the gap between two lines of writing and the split of the free bands in rulings 3 and 4. Books from different makers differ a little.

Limits. Only A4 and A5, only these seven book types, no handwriting and no template for tracing. For tracing letters, use the writing practice sheets. A margin under about 6 mm may be missing at the edge of the sheet, even though it is in the PDF. If a very large margin or correction margin leaves no room for one whole line, the preview says so.
