Connect the dots

Printable number pictures for preschool, kindergarten and grades 1 and 2: connect the dots from 1 to 100, counting by 2s, 5s or 10s, backwards or in alphabetical order. Choose from 40 built-in pictures or your own drawing, as a PDF with solution.

Picture
Pictures

Choose one or more pictures. With several, each image takes one of them, depending on its No.

In order, starting from the lowest number below.

5 to 100 dots, at most 26 for letters.

0 to 900. Counting forwards it is the first number, backwards the last. The highest number on the sheet is at most 999.

Size

Numbers 10 pt, dots 1.6 mm, at least 7 mm between two dots.

Orientation
Pictures per sheet

Every picture gets its own No. With 2 or 4 per sheet it is in small print under the picture.

Leave empty for “Connect the Dots”. Up to 80 characters, longer ones are set smaller or shortened.

1 to 30, each with its own numbers, so nobody copies.

1 to 999999. The No. determines the starting dot, the direction and, with several pictures, the picture. More images get the following numbers.

Solutions

After each: every sheet is followed by its solution. If you print on both sides, the solution ends up on the back; then “At the end” is better.

The PNG shows picture 1 on a white background, with the line if the preview shows the solution.

When printing, choose “Actual size” or “100%”, not “Fit to page”, otherwise dots, numbers and spacing get smaller than stated.

Saves the settings, No., picture choice, heading and your drawing as a JSON file on your device. Later, exactly the same sheets come from it.

Goes well with: Maze · Coloring page from a photo · Math worksheets · All kids tools

Nothing leaves this device. Pictures, PDF, PNG and the saved file are made here in your browser, nothing is stored.

How it works
  1. 01Choose a picture: one or more of the 40 built-in pictures or your own drawing. Set the counting and the number of dots.
  2. 02Set the size, orientation and pictures per sheet. The preview shows sheet 1 right away, with “Solution” also the line to draw. If you do not like the starting dot, “Roll again”.
  3. 03Download the PDF and print at “Actual size”. Picture 1 is also available as a PNG.

The pictures. There are 40 built-in pictures, all built from simple shapes: house, fish, star, car, crown and more. The tool takes their outer outline and places the dots on it. Window, door or the ladybug’s spots appear as a thin gray inner line, so that you can recognize something after connecting; this can be switched off. The pictures are simple shapes. With many dots a simple picture does not get harder, only tighter. For pictures up to 100, shapes with many corners and curves work, ideally your own drawing. If you choose a single picture, a note below tells you how many dots look good.

How the dots are made. Corners and tips come first, then the curves, and the straight stretches last (with “Extra dots” earlier). Two dots never get closer than 9 mm at preschool size, 7 mm in grade 1 and 5 mm in grade 2. If that many dots do not fit on the picture, the tool takes the largest number that fits and says so under “Dots”. The instructions on the sheet always give the real number. Every number sits in one of eight places around its dot, preferably outside, and covers no other number and no dot. The first dot has a ring.

Your drawing. Draw one line in a single stroke, such as the outline of a fish. If the end is close to the start, the shape is closed; this can be switched. Further strokes are extra lines (eye, window) and are printed thin in advance. Freehand drawing only works with a mouse, finger or pen. With “Single dots” each click sets the next dot of the line, with the keyboard you use the arrow keys and Enter. Drawn lines are smoothed slightly, single dots stay corners.

Sizes. Preschool: dots 2 mm, numbers 12 pt, one picture per sheet. Grade 1: dots 1.6 mm, numbers 10 pt (9 pt if space is tight). Grade 2: dots 1.3 mm, numbers 8 pt, down to 7 pt if space is tight. Printing is black on white, only lines, dots and numbers, A4 portrait or landscape with a margin of at least 12 mm.

Solutions. The solution page shows the same pictures small with the line drawn, with the No., picture and number of dots above. The name of the picture appears only there, not on the sheet: otherwise “What is it?” would be given away.

The No. Every picture has a number from 1 to 999999; it is in small print in the footer. The same No. and the same settings give exactly the same picture, even on another device. More pictures and sheets get the following numbers. This applies to this version of the tool.

Limits. At most 100 dots, 26 for letters, highest number 999, at most 30 sheets. The heading is set in Helvetica: characters this font does not know (such as emoji or ł) are dropped and named at the field. Very tangled drawings of your own that cross themselves are connected exactly as you drew them.

Nothing is saved. The page remembers neither settings nor drawings. The file from “Save to a file” contains the settings, the No., the picture choice, the heading and your drawing as lists of dots. If the heading contains a child’s name, it is also in the file and in the PDF. Both are made only on your device.
